the university’s administration has historically been incapable of responding effectively to this kind of problematic and divisive behavior that renders black students, faculty, and staff fearful, complacent, sick, and crazy. indeed, through the administration’s vacillation between inaction and coddling, it encourages and welcomes this behavior. hotty toddy bitches.

that simmering, borderbricoleur, is exactly it. simmering is so difficult to capture, but you know it’s there.

right @ so-treu. i was fundamentally unable to convince most people that ‘establishment,’ as it were, candidates of color for student government or homecoming queen were going to win, as their triumph served to firm up—not tear down—the power structure. their wins were silencing and facilitated this deafening roar that is always already present on campus. this is how white supremacy works in the post-civil rights era: co-opt, divide, and silence. it is a dangerous thing, and one that threatens not because of its presence, but because of its usual invisibility. that is, riots are happening every single day in everyday interaction and so-called polite discourse, but they can’t be seen with the naked eye like the riots that preceded meredith’s arrival or these demonstrations that followed election returns.

similarly, as much as i was excited for obama in ‘08 and feel something like relief or vindication with yesterday’s victory, there is still in me the ‘nay’: nay to drone attacks, nay to moderate complacency, nay to corporate welfare, nay to inadequate discourse around structural racism, sexism, heterosexism. so to all of these sorts of pyrrhic-victory wins, i give a resounding huey freeman “eh…” + two (2) kanye shrugs.

I was actually proud of the show. This particular episode raised
awareness about breast cancer in African American women and the need

When I first started reading Beyond the Black Lady I watched some of the video from the hearings, to see Hill’s ‘performance’ for myself. Hill is in my opinion a black lady, so I can’t be sure if she totally was performing during the hearing, but I can say she certainly did play up the whole idea of the black lady, that is poised, in control of herself, and most importantly, not a temptress.
But I thought this particular discussion was pretty interesting, so I posted the link.
